MT. PLEASANT – The Fort Madison Lady Hounds got a Southeast Conference win on the road at Mt. Pleasant Thursday night.
Brylie Lorence homered again for the Hounds in the 10-2 win over the Panthers. Lucia Darnell picked up the win, going all seven innings, scattering five hits, and striking out six.
Emma Snaadt was the heavy bat in the lineup, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and two runs scored.
Lorence had three RBIs, including the two-run homer in the top of the third to spot the Hounds a 3-0 lead. Snaadt drove in the other run with a two-out RBI single in front of Lorence’s blast.
Snaadt would get her other RBI in a four-run top of the fifth. Darnell and Marshall opened with singles and then Snaadt singled in Darnell. Lorence then hit a fly to center allowing Marshall to score on the tag up. Ava Fuget would single to center scoring Snaadt for a 7-1 lead.
Fort Madison would add two more in the top of the seventh when Olivia Buckner and Laci Gathers both singled in runs with no outs.
Fort Madison ripped off 14 hits with Kylie Lumino, Fuget, Buckner, Gathers, and Snaadt all having multi-hit games.
The Lady Hounds improve to 10-13 on the year and host Oskaloosa on Monday and then travel to West Burlington Monday night for a double header. They open post-season play Thursday at Keokuk’s Joyce Park in a 7 p.m. start.
Holy Trinity gets 19th win
NEW LONDON – Ellie Hellman had four RBIs in the Lady Crusaders' 19th win of the season. The Crusaders have put together their best season in school history going back to the 2002 season when Holy Trinity put together a 16-win season.
The Crusaders shut out New London/Winfield-Mt.Union 5-0 on the road.
HTC held a slim 2-0 lead going into the top of the sixth inning, but put up three runs when Hellman striped a three-run double to left field, scoring Morgan Krogmeier, Alivia Holmes, and Cayden Holmes to set the final score.
Jarvis went the distance in the circle, allowing just one hit, while striking out eight, and walking four.
Alivia Holmes had three hits on the night and a run scored. Kenna Gittings was 2-for-4 at the plate. McKayla Simpson and Elizabeth Griffin had the other hits for Holy Trinity, who has the second best overall record in the SEI Super Conference South Division at 19-7. They finished fourth in the league with a 6-5 record, giving them a 13-2 record outside division play, and won 11 of their last 13 games, and their last seven straight.
The Crusaders open post-season play Wednesday at 7 p.m. at South Park against the winner of Wapello (13-10) vs. WACO (0-21).
Seven-run fourth dooms Hounds
MT. PLEASANT – The Fort Madison boys dropped an 11-4 decision to Mt. Pleasant on the road Thursday night.
Fort Madison opened up a 3-0 lead in the first inning and held that through three innings. With two out and one on, Aiden Mitchell scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. Brody Cashman singled and Owen Huffman reached on an error to load the bases. Hunter Cook then reached on an error at short, allowing Cashman and Tateum Schelich to score for a 3-0 lead before the Panthers got out of the inning.
Huffman held the Panthers scoreless until the fourth where Mt. Pleasant worked seven hits, including a double, to take the 7-3 lead. They would add three more in the bottom half of the fifth with Michael Fuller coming on in relief of Huffman.
The Hounds would score a run in the sixth on a Corbin Van Niewaal fielder’s choice, but couldn’t muster anything else offensively.
Schelich had two hits on the night with a run scored. Reece Huey, Cashman, Huffman, and Cook had the other hits for Fort Madison.
Huffman went four innings, allowing seven runs, only one earned on eight hits, and fanned eight. Fuller was tagged with the other four runs on two hits. Van Niewaal pitched 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief.
The Hounds are now 7-20 on the year and host Oskaloosa on Monday before opening post-season play at Cedar Rapids Xavier on Friday, July 11th at 7 p.m.
