FORT MADISON – A wild first game helped Fort Madison’s girls to a sweep of Keokuk Monday night at Baxter Sports Complex. The Hounds rallied for a 16-15 win in the opener and then rolled 8-3 in the second game.
Tate Huffman went 2-for-4 at the plate in the opener including a 2-run homer to left that keyed an 8-run bottom of the fifth. The Chiefs held a 12-6 lead headed into the bottom half where the Hounds hit through the order. Kylie Lumino had a triple and Brylie Lorence had a double in the inning that saw the Hounds take a 14-12 lead. Fort Madison would score two more in the bottom of the sixth for a 16-12 lead, but Keokuk would plate three more in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to one, but Lucia Darnell would come on in relief of Emma Snaadt and get a strikeout to end the game. Snaadt threw three innings giving up five runs on 12 hits. Jordyn Marshall gave up 10 runs, six earned on seven hits.
Darnell got the win in the nightcap scattering five hits and fanning six while giving up three runs. Marshall, Lorence, and Ava Taylor all had multiple hits in the win. Lorence had two RBIs.
Tuesday’s game at Centerville was postponed due to weather. The Lady Hounds 3-3 (2-0 in Southeast Conference) host Fairfield at Baxter Sports Complex Thursday night.
Lady Hawks rally on the road
ANAMOSA – The Central Lee Hawks got two runs in the top of the ninth inning and Blake Davis shut down the Anamosa Blue Raiders in the bottom half for a 7-5 non-conference win Monday on the road.
Ward Fraise’s one-out grounder was misplayed at the mound allowing him to go to second. Mason Sanders drew a walk to put two on. Carver Hayes would foul out and then Bo Herdrich singled to center scoring Fraise. Kayden Calfee would follow that up with a single to right scoring Sanders from second base for a 7-5 lead in the second extra inning.
Davis would strike out the first two hitters in the bottom of the ninth and, after a hit batsman and single, he got another strikeout to secure the win.
Davis, Herdrich, and Calfee all had two hits in the game. Calfee drove in three of the Hawk runs. Davis had two RBIs.
Davis went 3 innings allowing just one hit and fanning eight. The Hawks struck out 17 on the day with Chase Johnson and Caedon Newton taking turns on the bump for Central Lee.
The Hawks are now 3-1 on the year and 1-1 in the SEI Super Conference. They are scheduled to play at Community Field in Burlington tonight depending on weather.
Lady Hawks win three of four
DONNELLSON – The Central Lee softball squad won two of three at a tournament this weekend at Indian Hills Community College.
The Lady Hawks downed Seymour 9-0 and Moravia 7-1, but were shut out by Carlisle 13-0. Jaci Hawk led the Hawks with five hits on the day. Kenna Sandoval and Olivia Day both homered in the three-game tournament. Hayden Rule got the win over Moravia going seven innings allowing six hits and one run while fanning nine and walking one. Jalyn Hawk took the loss against Carlisle giving up 13 runs all earned on 13 hits while walking one. Elaina Barlow got the Seymour win allowing just one hit over five innings striking out four.
On Monday, the Lady Hawks rallied from a 3-1 deficit through four innings to knock off Wapello 6-5. Jalyn Hawk hit a ball to third in the bottom of the seventh that was mishandled allowing Carlee Pezley to score from third with the game-winning run. Central Lee put up 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, but Wapello would respond with a run in the top of the 6th. The Hawks scored again in the bottom of the sixth, but Wapello would tie things up again in the top of the 7th on a one-out homer before the Hawks scored the game winner.
Holy Trinity girls come up short at Lone Tree
LONE TREE – The Crusaders lost 5-4 to Lone Tree on the road Monday night. It was the third loss in a row for Holy Trinity Catholic after starting the year 3-0.
A one-out error allowed a runner to score from second in the bottom of the seventh to give the Lions the win.
Sydney Jarvis went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Crusaders. Alivia Holmes was 2-for-3 with a couple runs scored. Jarvis had two RBIs and Ellie Hellman had two hits, both singles. Jarvis also went four innings in the circle allowing four runs on five hits while fanning five and walking four. Helmman went 2 1/3 allowing one run on two hits and suffered the loss.
The girls are scheduled to take on West Burlington Tuesday night on the road in a SEI Super Conference matchup.
SCC Baseball Summer Camp approaching
WEST BURLINGTON – The 2025 Southeastern Blackhawks Baseball Summer Camp is being held from June 16-18 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Cost for the camp is $150 for three sessions including a free t-shirt and ticket to a Bees' home game included. The camp will be held at the Wagner Athletic Complex on the SCC West Burlington campus.
The camp features current SCC Head Coach Justin Schulte, SCC hitting coach John McVey, SCC assistant coach Nate Robertson, and former Bloodhound head coach and current Central Lee assistant Ron Walker.
