KEOSAUQUA – The Central Lee Lady Hawks withstood some foul trouble and a second-half rally from Van Buren to move a game over .500 in the Southeast Iowa Superconference -  South Division.
Central Lee moves to 4-3 in the division and 5-5 overall with the 54-38 win behind 14 points from Lizzy Mason and a dozen from Kenna Sandoval.
The Hawks held a strong 30-11 lead at the end of the first half, but the Warriors, playing a game in tribute to the Menke family with the Hawks, hung strong in the second half outscoring Central Lee 27-24. Derek and Jansen Menke’s son Jayt is at an Iowa City Hospital with a heart condition.
Funds from t-shirts sold were donated to the Menke family at halftime.
“Van Buren came out physical in the second half and really made a good comeback. This is the second year in a row Kenna and Taylor (Jones) fouled out early. We struggled once that happened,” said Central Lee Head Coach Taylor Hickey.
“Tonight we said, 'for a bigger cause than us' and it showed for both teams.”
Ellie Lake had 11 points and led the Hawks with five boards. Mason had nine assists and eight steals.
In the boys game that followed, Central Lee won 64-35 behind Brayden Wyrick's 21. Owen Swan and Will Hayes both added 11. Carson Morrison added nine. The win improves the Hawks to 4-5 (3-4 SEISC).
On Monday, the Lady Hawks were stymied by the one-two back court punch of Burlington’s Daphne Brown and Mylee Stiefel who put up 36 points combined in a 63-20 win at BHS. Lizzy Mason had a dozen for Central Lee, including a couple 3-pointers and going 4-8 from the freethrow line. Taylor Jones had six and Kenna Sandoval added a bucket to round out the scoring.
The Hawks host cross-county rival Holy Trinity Catholic at 6 p.m. on Friday and then go up the highway Saturday to Fort Madison for an afternoon game starting at 11:30 a.m.
