FORT MADISON – The Lady Hounds' tennis team salvaged a couple wins against Mt. Pleasant in doubles' play Monday night in Fort Madison.
Savannah Sissel and Lily Buckner held on for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles while Athena Snook and Marlee Weiler knocked off Lianah Phangchanthong and Shaye Barbee 8-3 for the only Bloodhound wins in the 2-7 home loss.
Mt. Pleasant took all six singles matches and the No 1 doubles match to set the pace for the afternoon.
Athena Snook took Bella Dodds to the brink, falling 8-9 after suffering a 5-7 final set tiebreaker loss. Buckner was held off by Phangchanthong at No. 5 doubles 6-8 and Barbee needed an extra set to down Bella Vollmer 7-9 at No. 6 singles.
Lucille Zimmerman and Mady Emmett both lost 2-8 at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. Savannah Sissel fell 3-8 at No. 3.
Emmett and Zimmerman fell 5-8 to Lila Cook and Bella Dodds at No. 1 doubles.
“All of the girls from both teams enjoyed the hot weather break we had today. It made tennis much more enjoyable for everyone. It was a long day for them with the first day of classes being today,” said head Coach MaShelle Knipe.
“Athena Snook and Bella Vollmer both had long singles matches. Athena's even turned into a tiebreaker. They both did amazing jobs. They were not willing to give up even when they were tired.”
Knipe said the girls are putting in the work to get better each day.
“I have said it before, but I am so proud of these girls. I let them know that they get out what they put in and, gosh, these girls are putting in the work,” she said.
“I am sure they will continue to do the same throughout the coming weeks.”
