Lady Hounds get tiebreaker win over West Hancock; fall to Washington
FORT MADISON – The Lady Hound volleyball team won a thrilling 5-set contest over West Hancock in a non-conference Iowa-Illinois border battle Monday in Fort Madison.
The Hounds lost the first set 17-25, but battled back to a 25-21 win in the second set. They fell again in the third set 25-16 and then pulled off the tiebreaker 15-12 for the win.
“I saw a spark in the team tonight and everyone contributed,” said Head Coach Kelly Knustrom. “Whether it was lifting up each other, putting the ball down, serving aces, or flying around the floor on defense. To say I’m proud of them is an understatement.”
Jordyn Grisham had 48 assists, an ace, and seven digs. Mackenzie Huebner came up with 10 digs. Kylie Lumino served 17 of 17 with an ace, while Jayce Fullenkamp had 10 kills, two aces, and 10 digs. Dayonna Davis had 25 kills, two aces, 15 digs, Lyla Smith added 10 kills and Sydney McEntee added four kills.
On Tuesday night the ladies dropped three sets to Washington on the road in the conference regular  season wrap-up. Fort Madison fell 10-25, 11-25, 13-25 in a game shrouded in emotion as the Indians dealt with the death of a fellow student.
Fort Madison stands at 11-11 on the season and 1-4 in Southeast Conference play. They play in the first round of SEC Tournament play on Monday, Oct 6 at Burlington High School beginning at 5 p.m. and then travel to Durant on Saturday for a four-team tourney.

Lady Hound runners win again
WASHINGTON – The Fort Madison Cross Country teams continue to dominate fields around southeast Iowa this season.
The Lady Hounds won Tuesday’s Washington Invitational behind Avery Rump's 18:45 title run. Addison Rump took 4th overall in the nine-team format at 19:45. Mara Smith was 6th in team scoring and 11th overall at 20:44. Jordyn Marshall was fourth for Fort Madison, seventh in team scoring, and 9th overall with a 20:51. The other scoring runner for the Lady Hounds was Ellie Hellman at 21:58. She finished 11th in team scoring and 13th overall.
McKayla Schinstock ran a 22:33, Eloise Lamb finished in at 23:06, and Ellie Huebner had a 24:04 time.

In the boys' run, the Bloodhounds won with 38 points. Riley Tripp led the way for the Hounds with a 16:47 (3rd overall) and Hunter Wiegand was right behind at 16:52 which was 4th in team scoring and 7th overall.
Mason McLey finished 7th in team scoring at 16:58.27 with Nolan Guzman right on his step at 16:58.64 good enough for 8th in team scoring. Jacob Walker again was in the top 5 in scoring for the Hounds with an 18:13.35.
Other Hound runners included Oliver Wiese (18:19), Logan McClure (19:06), Colton Tripp (19:42), Elie Brunault (19:49), Zackary Hermes, (19:53), Jake Haessig (21:40), Jackson Haessig (23:03), and Kian Koering (23:31).

Little Hounds move to 3-1
FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison 8th grade football team won two of their last three and move to 3-1 on the season.
On Tuesday the Little Hounds downed Washington 36-6 behind two rushing TDs from Gunner Perry and another from Gunner Steele. Valentino Maestro rushed for 77 yards and scored another touchdown for Fort Madison.
Caden Rehm completed two passes for 15 yards. Steele had five tackles to lead the Hound defense.
The Little Hounds fell to Ottumwa on the road 12-8 last Tuesday, and knocked off Burlington on Sept. 16.
Against Ottumwa, Brae Hill threw a TD to Rehm for 31 yards. Perry ran in the 2 pt. conversion. Kasen Lumino had five carries for 17 yards. Gunner Steele had 14 tackles, while Owen Weisinger had six. The Hounds are 2-1 on the year and played Washington at home Tuesday night.
On the 16th, the Little Hounds came out on the winning side with a 14-8 win over the Grayhounds.
Valentino Maestro had 63 yards on 12 carries including a 2 pt. conversion. Perry had 30 yards and a TD on the ground. Hill threw for 66 yards and a TD to Deshon Robinson. Steele had six tackles and a pick on defense.
