MOUNT VERNON – Fort Madison's Brylie Lorence continues her torrid start to the year, taking her third first-place finish of the year Monday night at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon
The senior led the pack with a 42’ 4.5” in shotput in girls' 3A to win the title by a full two feet. And that throw was two feet under the throw last week at the IATC Indoor Championships in Ames with a crazy 44’ 10.75” throw to win that event by almost seven feet.
That throw is the top throw in the state this year, just past Burlington’s Kylie Hill (44’5.5) and ranked her 23rd in the country. She also had a throw of 43’8” at the meet and had the best four throws overall.
At last week’s IATC’s the Hounds got a 4th-place finish in the 4x800 meter relay with Avery Rump, McKayla Schinstock, Addison Rump, and Mara Smith with a 10:15.85, behind Gilbert, Mt. Vernon, and Pella. Avery Rump capture 8th in the 1500 with a 5:10.66 and 7th in the 3000-meter at 11:08.52.
On the boys' side in Ames, Nolan Guzman captured 5th in the 800-meter run at 2:05.41 and Caden Barnes captured 7th in the boys' shot with a 48’-7.25”. The boys' 4x800 team of Peyton Lambert, Mason McLey, Riley Tripp, and Guzman captured a bronze for 3rd at 8:32.34. Julian Dear had a top-10 finish in the 200 at 23.10.
For the Lady Hounds at Mt. Vernon Monday night, Dayonna Davis, fresh off a strong junior season on the basketball court, took first place with a 15’-4” long jump, a half foot ahead of the pack for her first title of the year.
Olivia Bucker finished a strong 3rd in the 60-meter dash at 8.33. She finished third in the prelims, as well.
The girls' 4x800 of Addison Rump, Smith, Lyla Smith, and Jordyn Marshall took 1st at 10:44.10. Lillian Gelsthorpe got a top-10 in the 200-meters with 30.22 (9th). Avery Rump was second in the 1500 at 5:08.35 and Marshall was 4th with a time of 5:32.86. Schinstock took 2nd in the 400 at 1:05.48.
Addison Rump got her first 1st-place of the year with a 2:39.96 in the 800-meter run and the 4x200 team of Gelsthorpe, Buckner, Alaina Schwerin, and Davis took first place with a 1:56.46.
The 4x400 team of Schinstock, Mara Smith, Addison Rump and Avery Rump was 4th with a 4:35.34.
