Lee County schools send four to state meet

Bunnell qualifies for Central Lee; joins Rump, Tripp, and Weigand from FMHS

LEE COUNTY – Lee County schools will send four athletes to Friday’s State Cross-Country meet at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge.
All the runners will run in Friday competition, led off by Central Lee’s Aubree Bunnell, who qualified Thursday afternoon out of the Iowa City Regina 2A state qualifier.
Bunnell, a sophomore, had a nice 10th-place overall finish and was 9th in team scoring with a 20:56.5 to lead the Hawks to a nice sixth-place overall finish with 98 points. The top three scoring teams qualify and the top 15 individual runners qualify to the state meet.
Other scoring runners for the Lady Hawks included Macy Anderson (29th overall; 25th in team scoring) with a 22:29.2. Afton Maynes and Charlee Clay ran side by side finishing 38th and 39th, respectively, in team scoring, 43rd and 44th overall. Maynes had a time of 23:35.6, while Clay ran a 23:36.6. Evelyn Adkins was the other scoring runner with a 58th-place team time of 25:20.1. Other runners were Gabby Maynes (70/62) and Saphire Cummings (83/72).
The Central Lee boys finished 10th overall at the Regina run.
Austin Fogarty led the way with a 29th-place team time of 18:34.2. Freshman Orion St. Clair was second in for the Hawk boys with a 46th-place 19 flat. Caedon Newton finished third for Central Lee and 51st overall with a 19:19.2. Caden Crozier finished 53rd in team scoring at 19:21.5 and Kaidin Humes rounded out the scoring runners for the Hawks with a 56th-place 19:34.9
Other runners for the boys included: Henry Robbins 20:42.3 (74/76), and Jaedin Oglesby 21:35.1 (81/79).
Bunnell will join Avery Rump, Riley Tripp, and Hunter Weigand, who will all run for Fort Madison in 3A events. Rump, a senior will take off at 2 p.m. while Tripp, also a senior, and Weigand, a junior, will run at 2:45 p.m.
Holy Trinity’s boys were led by Tanner Williams 20:16 (38th).  Chase Menke ran a 22:07 (63rd), followed by Brayden Williams 22:11 (64th), Alex Scheetz 24:21 (79th) and Jacob Baker 24:23 (80th). They Crusaders finished 13th with 324 points.
Keokuk had no runners qualify for state. Sam Higby led the Chief boys with a 35th place with an 18:13.  Violet Shead had a 23:51.7 to lead Keokuk's girls in 39th place.
