FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison 6th grade girls' basketball team, consisting of six 6th graders and one fifth grader, had a successful season, finishing with an impressive 30-1 record with their only loss being to Knight's Basketball Academy, an AAU team from St. Louis.
These girls are a special team with many of the players playing together since 3rd grade and a few since they were four years old at the YMCA level.
Fort Madison girls won the Iowa Middle School State Championship going 5-0 defeating Cresco Cadets 44 to 17; FLK-Davenport Assumption 38-17; Springville Orioles 55 to 10; and Lancaster Flying Arrows -Lancaster, Wis. 27-24 and 23-12 in the championship game.
In addition to winning the state championship, these ladies won two tournaments playing up in the 7th grade divisions this season at Mediapolis and Tipton. They also received two gold Quad Cities' tournament titles, including the Quad City Championship where they defeated tough competitors including a team from Cuba City, Wis.
Members of the team are Ava Banks, Diamond Garcia, Dreu Ellis, Ella Weisinger, Kaelyn Dean, Katelyn Marshall, and Nora Huebner. They are coached by Angel Garcia, Ashley McGowan-Garcia, and Diego Garcia.
