FM boys hand BHS first conference loss of season

FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison softball team was shut out by Burlington Thursday night in a Southeast conference game after a six-run top of the 6th.
The Lady Hounds downed Danville 17-2 on Wednesday. They stand at 8-10 overall and 5-7 in SEC play.
On Thursday, the Hounds trailed 7-0 as Burlington’s Kylee Hill held Fort Madison to just two hits on the night. The Grayhound then hit a three-run homer to left to set the final score. Jordyn Marshall took the loss going 5 1/3, allowing 11 runs on 10 hits, while striking out three. Lucia Darnell pitched the final 2/3, allowing two runs on two hits.
Wednesday, the Hounds collected eight runs over the first two innings and then put a nine-spot in the fourth to set the 15-run rule after four innings in the win over Danville.
Brylie Lorence went 3 for 3 with seven RBIs and three homeruns, giving her nine on the year. Kylie Lumino and Darnell also each had three hits for the Hounds. Emma Snaadt got the win, allowing just two hits and two runs over four innings of work. She struck out three and walked three in the win.
Fort Madison hosts Class 3A No. 9 Washington in a doubleheader Monday night. They travel to the University of Iowa for a 6:30 p.m. game against Newton on Tuesday and then play at Mt. Pleasant on Thursday at 7 p.m.

FM boys hand Burlington only SEC loss
FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison Bloodhounds snapped a 3-game losing streak in a big way Thursday when they knocked off conference unbeaten Burlington 7-4.
Owen Hufffman got the win for Fort Madison, going five innings and scattering three hits, while allowing three runs, all earned. He fanned six and walked six. Luke Hellige got the save, going two innings, giving up just two hits and one earned run.
Aiden Mitchell drove in three runs, including a two-run single to right in a 3-run second for a 4-2 lead after two. Burlington would add a run in the top of the third to cut the lead to one, but the Bloodhounds would drop two more on BHS in the bottom of the fifth and another run in the sixth for a 7-3 lead. Burlington would get a run in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate  with two outs, but Hellige coaxed an infield fly to end the game.
Tateum Schelich was 2-of-3 with a run scored. Huffman and Michael Fuller had the other hits for the Hounds.
On Wednesday, the Hounds dropped a 16-4 decision to Muscatine in five innings. Fort Madison scored four in the fourth inning to make it an 11-4 game, but the Muskies put up five in the top of the sixth and shut out the Hounds in the bottom half for the win. Brody Cashman was 2-for-2 in the game with a run scored. Reecy Huey, Mitchell,  Hellige, Hunter Cook, and Fuller all had hits for Fort Madison.

HTC girls heating up as post-season nears
WEST POINT – The Holy Trinity Crusaders have won their last five games, including wins Thursday over Hillcrest Academy 10-1 and a sweep of Mt. Pleasant on Friday 9-0, 11-7.
They wrap up the regular season this week with a game at WACO Tuesday and New London Wednesday. They open post-season July 9 against the winner of WACO/Wapello at South Park.
On Friday, Sydney Jarvis threw the shutout in the opener as the Crusaders raced to a 9-0 lead after two innings in the 4 ½ inning affair. Jarvis also had a double and drove in two. Kenna Gittins was 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs in the win. Alivia Holmes, McKayla Simpson, and Morgan Krogmeier all had multi-hit games in the win.
In the nightcap, the Crusaders put up 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie. HTC started their half of the sixth with seven straight hits, including Emily Ross’ double that scored two. Cadyn Holmes had a two-run single to left scoring Krogmeier and Ross. Jarvis and Ellie Hellman each had three hits in the win. Simpson, Ross, Krogmeier, and Brooklyn Todd all had two hits.

Lady Hawks face tough teams at Doran Classic
DONNELLSON – The Central Lee Lady Hawks went to the Rick Doran Classic at Iowa City Saturday to play against the top softball teams in the state of Iowa.
The girls went 0-2 with identical 1-11 losses to Class 5A No. 4 West Des Moines Valley and Class 3A No. 7 West Liberty. The losses come after a 3-1 stint over the week with wins over Mediapolis, West Burlington, and New London. They dropped a 3-5 decision to Class 3A No. 9 Washington at home on Wednesday.
On Saturday, Kamryn Cox, Maria Young, Jalyn Hawk, and Aubree Bunnell had the only hits against West Liberty. Elaina Barlow took the loss for Central Lee. In the opener, Jaci Hawk, Kenna Sandoval, Jalyn Hawk, and Bunnell had the hits for the Lady Hawks. Jalyn Hawk had the RBI and took the loss in the circle.
On Thursday, the ladies got the sticks out, racking up 14 hits and 17 runs in a 17-4 win over New London-WMU. Sandoval and Jalyn Hawk both homered for Central Lee. It was Sandoval's third straight game with a homerun before the weekend tourney. She homered in wins over Mediapolis and Washington.
Central Lee is 19-6 overall and 11-0 in SEI Super Conference play. They travel to Danville for a doubleheader Tuesday night starting at 5:30 and then travel to Keokuk on Wednesday before hosting Class 2A No. 2 Louisa-Muscatine on Thursday night. They wrap up the regular season next Monday with a double header at home against Burlington. The Hawks open post-season play July 10 at home against Monticello in Class 3A Region 5 action beginning at 7 p.m.
