CEDAR FALLS – Fort Madison’s Brylie Lorence let her presence be felt early in the season after a run at the IGHSAU state meet in 2024.
Lorence won the loaded Dickinson Relays at the University of Northern Iowa on Monday with a throw of 42’ 6.75 inches. Her throw was a full 14 inches ahead of the pack and sets a tone for this year’s upcoming outdoor spring track season.
The throw also shows the off-season work Lorence has put in to build on her 36’ 1.5” throw in the 3A girls' state meet last year at Drake. The throw also qualifies the senior for the Drake Relays this year.
Another strong showing to open the season on the boys' side was the 4th-place finish of senior Julian Dear in the men’s 200-meter dash. Dear raced to a 23.03, .43 seconds off the pace of Grinnell’s Kellan Harter who ran a 22.6. Dear raced to 18th overall in the 60-meter dash with a 7.16. That’s the 25th fastest time in the state this season so far.
The men’s 4x800-meter relay team of Peyton Lambert, Riley Tripp, Mason McLey, and Nolan Guzman finished a respectable sixth with an 8:30.32. The same foursome ran an 8:20.40 for 15th place at the IHSAA state meet in 2024.
Guzman then wrapped up 13th place in the 800-meter run with a 2:06.70, the 26th fastest time in the state, to open the spring season. Lambert was 18th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.77, while Tripp finished 49th in the 1600-meter run at 5:12.77
Kendan Bowie grabbed 12th in the high jump with a 5-10. Bowie also qualified for state last year and placed 5th with a jump of 6’7”. Sophomore Urijah Brooks captured 14th in the men’s shotput with a throw of 48’ 6.75” inches.
On the ladies’ side, the 4x200-meter relay team of ran a 2:08.30 for a 71st-place finish. Lillian Gelsthorpe ran an 8.55 in the 60-meter prelims for 61st place. The senior ran a 29.58 in the 200. Dayonna Davis was 68th recording an 8.59. The junior also took 32nd in the 200-meter dash with a 28.14. Mara Smith ran a 1:06.05 in the 400-meter dash for 49th place. Olivia Buckner ran a 28.75 in the 200 for 59th place overall.
McKayla Schinstock just missed a top-25 finish in the 800-meter run. The junior ran a 2:37.69, a half second out of 25th place.
