FAIRFIELD – Fort Madison brought home five titles at the Southern Iowa Classic in Fairfield Saturday.
The event functions as a Southeast Conference tournament and the Bloodhounds took the title with 199 points followed by Fairfield 152 and Mt. Pleasant 139.5
The Bloodhound’s heavyweight Baylor Ferreira (18-12) captured first place and had the most mat time of the day for Fort Madison. Berreira went 5-0 on the day without a bye. He did get a forfeit win over Fort Madison’s Cal Hennings, but wrestled out the rest of his matches for the title. Hennings was runner-up in the 285 lb. bracket.
A semifinal win over Washington’s Rudy Wolfe was one of the more dramatic wins for the Hounds. Ferreira got a takedown at the halfway point of the first period, but Wolfe was able to escape 10 seconds later. The two stayed at 3-1 until the third period when Ferreira executed a reversal from a down start for a 5-1 lead, but Wolfe would get a turnaround of his own a minute later to cut the lead to 5-3. Ferrier would get an escape with less than 10 seconds remaining to factor out any late Wolfe points to win the match and advance to the finals.
He would record a first period pinfall over Keokuk’s Dylan Whitaker for the title.
2025 State qualifier James Fuller went 3-0 on the day working some techniques and recording three technical falls at 126 lbs. His 21-6 tech fall over Mt. Pleasant’s Lane Beckler (23-10) earned him the title.
Zane Houtz captured first place at 113 lbs. also going 3-0 on the day including a bye in round one and two falls over Burlington’s Gavin Navarro and Fairfield’s Quinn Settles both in the first period.
