DES MOINES – Fort Madison Head Coach Nic Chiri called Friday’s wrestling at the IHSAA State Wrestling meet in Des Moines “bonus wrestling”.
He said the words Thursday after junior Ren Watson and sophomore Baylor Ferreira both advanced in consolation brackets at 215 lbs. and 285 lbs. respectively.
The bonus wrestling was short lived however as both Watson and Ferreira lost their opening matches on Friday shortly after noon. Coincidentally the two lost wrestling at the same time and wrestling two brothers from Independence.
Gavin Eddy and Carter Eddy both took out the Bloodhounds but neither made it to a placing round in either weight class.
Watson lost in a major decision 7-0 to Carter Eddy. Watson was able to fend off any nearfalls wrestling from a defensive posture most of the second and third periods. Watson took the top spot to start period 2, but a quick first step by Eddy got him away from Watson’s daunted cradle from the top position. Eddy scored another take down from a standing position with a minute left in the second period and was able to ride Watson out for a period and a half to get the win
Ferreira, on the other hand had an advantage heading into the second period of his match with Gavin Eddy. After being assessed a one-point penalty for locking his hands at the edge of the circle 15 seconds into the second period, Ferreira got the up spot on a restart and worked a cradle on Eddy that he had locked up for close to 10 seconds, but didn't get the slap and couldn’t reposition for the pin. The Hound got a four-point nearfall, but Eddy would score a reversal with eight seconds left in the period.to trail 4-3 going into the third period.
Ferreira would battle out of the down spot half way through the final period for a 5-3 lead. The junior then went for his favorite headlock take down and the two fell to the mat simultaneously with Eddy getting the advantage and the 3-point takedown for a 6-5 lead. Eddy would work that to a nearfall that turned into a pin with one second left in the match.
Ferriera was coming off an upset win over the 2As 11th-ranked Regan Rogers of Knoxville on Thursday to advance to Friday wrestling.
