ANAMOSA – Fort Madison’s Hunter Wiegand has been pushing the pack on the Bloodhound cross country team, and on Saturday in Anamosa he moved to the front.
Wiegand is having his best fall cross country season ever and capped it almost getting under the 17-minute mark at the Anamosa Invitational.
The junior helped Fort Madison to a runner-up team finish with 67 points just five points shy of Denver.
Wiegand raced to a 17:03.2 which was 24 seconds ahead of the rest of the Bloodhounds and was fourth best overall. Riley Tripp, who’s been leading Fort Madison for most of the season finished 8th overall with a 17:27.1 and Nolan Guzman upped his game a little with a nice 17:32.5 for 9th place.
Jacob Walker and Mason McLey rounded out the five scoring runners for the Hounds with an 18:26.30 (21st) and 18:32.6 (25th) respectively.
Other runners for the Hounds were Oliver Wiese (19:26.3), Logan McClure (19:42.6), Colton Tripp (19:50.8), Elie Brunault (19:52.8), Zach Hermes (19:52.8), Jake Haessig (21:33.6), Jackson Haessig (24:32.2), Kian Koering (25:15.1) and Vance Scheussler (26:46.1).
Avery Rump got under 19 minutes to finish second overall in the girls run and lead Fort Madison to yet another title. Rump ran an 18:56.3, just 4.2 seconds off the mark set by Monticello freshman Mary Grace Lyons. The Lady Hounds compiled 49 points a full 20 ahead of runner-up Solon.
Addison Rump finished fourth overall with a 19:57.8 again under the 20-minute mark. Jordyn Marshall moved up to third among the Lady Hounds with a 21:38 good enough for 13th overall. Mara Smith was right behind her with a 21:47.5 (14th) and Ellie Helman rounded out the scoring runners with a 22:06.8 for 18th.
The other Lady Hounds running on Saturday were Eloise Lamb 23:19, Ellie Huebner 24:15, McKayla Schinstock 24:50.3 and Abbie Ralph 25:31.4
