MEDIAPOLIS – The Holy Trinity boys had to go into OT for the second time in a week, but this time came out on the wrong end at Mediapolis.
The Bulldogs were down by a point with 4 seconds left on the clock and were trying to inbound when senior Corbin Van Niewaal was whistled for a foul trying to defend the inbound play. Mediapolis converted one of the freethrows to tie the game at 60 and force an overtime session. The Bulldogs then outscored HTC 16-8 in the extra session to get the win 76-68.
The Crusaders led 31-28 at the half, but Mediapolis, who has been playing rally ball most of the year, again came back to take a 47-43 lead into the final period. Layne Rung had nine of his team-high 20 in the fourth period, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Bulldogs (11-3 SEISC South, 12-5).
Jack Ragar had 19 in the win and Van Niewaal had 11. Max Griffin led all scorers with 24 for Mepo. William Worrall had 23, including four three-pointers in the second half.
Holy Trinity falls to 11-7 overall and 7-7 in conference play. They host Fairfield on Tuesday and then play in the SEISC Shoot-Out on Friday and Saturday.
Central Lee girls stumble with VB County
DONNELLSON – Taylor Jones led the Hawks with 16 points, but the Central Lee girls couldn’t catch up to Van Buren County at home Friday night.
Van Buren left town with a 60-44 SEI Super Conference South win and improve to 12-7 (9-5 SEISC) while Central Lee falls to 9-9 (8-6).
The Lady Warriors put up 22 points in the first quarter and the Hawks hung around with 19 of their own in the quick start for both teams. But Central Lee went ice cold from the field for the first six minutes of the second period and didn’t score again until two minutes left, trailing 35-21. Van Buren would carry a 38-22 halftime advantage.
The Hawks would only manage 22 points in the second half as the Warriors pulled away.
