WEST BURLINGTON – The Lady Hawks got a big second half from senior post Kenna Sandoval as they downed West Burlington 62-55 Thursday night in SEI Super Conference girls' basketball action at West Burlington.
Sandoval put up 16 points in the second and went to the freethrow line 12 times enroute to a 20-point performance to help get Central Lee to 9-8 overall and 8-5 in the SEISC South division.
Nora Lampe was hot from long distance as she fired in six 3-balls on her way to 18 points. Taylor Jones chipped in with 13.
Kaylee Webb had 15 to lead the Falconettes.
West Burlington cut the lead to just two at 57-55 with one minute left, but the Lady Hawks shut WB down from there, going on a 6-0 run to seal the win.
The girls host Van Buren for Senior Night tonight and then travel to Keokuk on Saturday.
Central Lee boys squander lead
WEST BURLINGTON – The Central Lee boys led for three quarters at West Burlington before falling 49-46 to the Falcons in SEI Super Conference boys' basketball action Thursday night.
Sophomore Cason Brown scored eight points of West Burlington’s 10 in the final period, including two 3-pointers to help the Falcons rally for the win.
Central Lee held a 26-18 lead at the half, but suffered through a 21-13 third quarter deficit to allow West Burlington to get back into the game. The Hawks lost track of senior Ari Jannings who hit from long range three times in the quarter and helped tied the game up at 39 going into the fourth quarter.
A Brown 3-ball a minute into the final period gave the Falcons their first lead of the second half and kept the Hawks at bay for the final six minutes, despite being within a bucket in the final minute.
The loss leaves West Burlington and Central Lee deadlocked at 8-5 in SEISC South play. Central Lee is a half game better in the overall standings at 11-6, with West Burlington at 10-6. The Hawks have lost their last three in a row and will try to get back on track when they host Van Buren tonight for senior night at Central Lee High School. They play at Keokuk Saturday and then are off until the SEISC Shootout Friday and Saturday.
Keokuk boys drop two duals
KEOKUK - The Chiefs dropped two duals in a quadrangular at Keokuk Thursday night.
Keokuk fell 65-13 to Williamsburg and 60-10 to Oskaloosa at Keokuk High School.
Against Williamsburg, Camden Briggs got a fall at 126 lbs. The Chiefs also got wins from Xavier Nelson at 144 lbs. and Jarod Anderson at 190 in a 5-3 decision.
Nelson also got a win in the match with Osky and another fall from Gavin LeMaster at 150 lbs. Dylan Whittaker earned a 6-3 decision at 285 lbs. to round out the Chiefs scoring.
