WEST BURLINGTON – A lot of individual personal records were set at the chilly Falcon Relays in West Burlington Monday night.
Fort Madison got first-place finishes from Julian Dear, who got under 11 seconds in the 100 with a 10.95. Dear will have to take .15 off that time to meet the 10.80 Blue Standard for the 2025 Drake Relays in May.
Fort Madison also got a first-place finish from Gavin Callahan in the 110 hurdles. Callahan ran a 15.92.
"I just PR’d with that and hopefully within the next couple meets, I can get down to 15.5,” he said.
“I’m training more than I did last year. After this meet, I’m also going to train for the 400-meter lows. I just want to run hurdles this year and that’s my main focus,” Callahan said.
The senior hasn’t run the 400 hurdles this year, but did run the 400 last year a few times.
Mason McLey won the 400 open in Class A and was 3rd overall at 53:60, while junior Nolan Guzman won the Class A 800-meter run and was 4th overall with a 2:08.82. Brayton Schneider, who missed last week’s Steve Roth Relays, came into Monday’s meet and captured second in the discus with a spin of 146’6”. Caden Barnes was 2nd in the shotput with a throw of 50’1.25”. Urijah Brooks was right behind in 3rd at 47’8.75”.
Head Coach Keith Helling said the Hounds' relays are still coming along nicely despite having some kinks to work out. He shuffled lineups a little bit on Monday to try different people in different spots. Dear also competed in the high jump for the first time and was kept out of the distance medley.
“I was surprised to see him over there. I looked over and asked him what he was doing and he just said, “I’m gonna high jump today,” Helling said.
Central Lee Head Coach Tyler Bryant said he was happy with Hawks' performance in the chilly weather.
“Overall, our guys did well. We’re in a tough class – Danville, Mepo, those guys are really talented,” he said. “We have four of five different PRs and that’s what I’m looking for, to make sure our guys are improving.”
The Hawks were without sprinter Kegan Damico, who was out with an illness.
The throwers carried the night for Central Lee and got the top individual results.
“They led the way tonight. Ostyn (Moore) was second and Owen Krogmeier 6th in the discus, so kudos to them, and I think they both PR’d. So as long as we keep on climbing, I’m happy.”
On the track, Luke Kruse earned a 4th-place in the 100 and 200. The boys' 800 sprint medley also captured fourth.
