WEST BURLINGTON – Fort Madison is coming off a good showing at the Roth Relays on Thursday and put together a nice run at the Falcon Relays Monday in West Burlington.
Nolan Guzman got the lone title at the Relays Monday with a 1st-place finish in the high jump at 6’4”, the 11th best jump in the state this year.
The Bloodhounds also got a 1st-place finish in the 1600 from senior Riley Tripp. Tripp led the crowd with a 4:39.02
Guzman, in his senior year also took 4th in the open 400 and anchored the Bloodhounds’ 2nd-place 4x400 team with Mason McLey, Riley Tripp, and sophomore Henry Ireland at 3:43.35.
Fort Madison got several second-place finishes Monday led by Urijah Brooks in the shotput at 55’4”, his second throw over 55 feet this year. Brooks threw 55’10” in Washington on Thursday which is currently 8th best in the state. Washington junior Greyson Hartman set the state’s best mark Monday in West Burlington with a 67’5” heave.
Fort Madison’s 4x200 team of Owen Huffman, Nolan Schinstock, Ryker Peters, and Hunter McGinity-McKasson ran a 1:34.58 good enough for second place.
Central Lee’s Jack Benner took 2nd in the Class B shotput with a throw of 124’6” and he was third in the shot in Class B with a throw of 38’8.25”. The Hawks’ Caden Crozier was second in the 3200 in Class B with a 12:41.60. That time was fourth best overall with teammate Caedon Newton right behind at 12:54.64 good enough for 3rd in Class B and 5th overall.
Keokuk’s Ryan Bair took titles in the 100 (11.17) and 200 (22.68). The Chiefs' Travarius Smith was tops in the 400 at 49.88, and Lincoln Wray was second overall in the 400 hurdles at 58.10.
Fort Madison’s Keith Helling said the team is at 48 athletes to start the year.
“This is the biggest (team) of (my) three years now and it’s going very well so far,” he said.
The 4x800, team which qualified for state last year, is back intact with the exception of Peyton Lambert ,who will be replaced with Noah Krogmeier in the heart of the season.
Helling said Aurelio Jacuinde is coming along nicely in the sprints. Jacuinde ran a 12.44 Monday in West Burlington in the 100. Helling said he’s also high on sophomore Henry Ireland who is sub 56 in the open 400 and will be able to help the Hounds in that event and the 4x400.
Helling said Brooks is making good progress in that event and Thursday’s 55’10” was a personal best for him. Brooks qualified for state last year. But his two 55 throws this year are a full five feet over his performance at state in 2025.
“I’m just trying to be patient and not jump the gun on anything. We’re going to take it one week at a time. The guys are excited. We’ve changed up how we’re training this year and doing a lot more threshold training,” Helling said. “We’ve put a lot more attention to that. They got a lot more volume of miles and last year we focused on speed.”
He said he’s been impressed with sprint events and technique in the sprint relays.
‘Our handoffs were perfect and that’s what I wanted to see out of the first meet. None of the runners turned around to get the baton.”
