DONNELLSON – The Central Lee boys knocked off Class 1A No. 5 St. Ansgar on Saturday after getting  wins over Van Buren and New London in SEI Super Conference action on Wednesday and Thursday.
They lost just their fourth game of the year on Saturday when Grandview Christian took an 8-1 win from the Hawks.
The Hawks take on Burlington Notre Dame in a makeup game tonight in Burlington.
The win Saturday over the Saints came at Waterloo’s Riverfront Stadium in a Saturday tourney.
The Hawks opened with two runs in the top of the first on a Kayden Calfee double, but the Saints would battle back to score three in the third and another run in the fourth for a 4-2 lead headed into the fifth inning.
Ward Fraise would drive in Chase Johnson with two outs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to one. Then Kellen Weber, who went 1 1/3 innings, would lock down the Saints in the sixth and seventh, while the Hawks' offense got going with three runs in each inning to get the win.
Brayden Wyrick doubled with two outs to score Caedon Newton from second. Newton singled scoring Bo Herdrich and Calfee on the previous at bat in the top of the seventh to give Central Lee some room.
Herdrich, Newton, Johnson, and Brett Cook all had multiple hit games. Newton drove in three runs for the Hawks.
In the opener Saturday, the Hawks had Grandview tied up at 1 going into the bottom of the fifth.  Newton got the first hitter out on strikes, but then gave up a walk before Weber came on in relief. Weber walked the next hitter and then hit a batter to load the bases. The wheels fell off from there as GVC recorded a couple hits following an infield error to go up 5-1. A two-run single made the score 7-1. They would add another run for a seven-run fifth inning to set the final score.
The Hawks move to 15-4 on the year and 7-3 in SEISC play. They wrap up the regular season this week with tonite’s game at BND, then a double header home against Danville. The Hawks travel to Keokuk on Wednesday for the final game of the regular season. They open post-season play July 8 against the winner of WMU/Wilton at Chariton Middle School with a 5 p.m. start.
