Hawks off to 3-0 start

Central Lee boys shut out Sigourney and have allowed just one goal in three matches

DONNELLSON — Justin Schau got a good look at his Central Lee boys soccer team this week.
The Hawks finished their three-matches-in-five-days sweep with a 4-0 win over Sigourney-Keota on Friday night.
Central Lee (3-0) defeated Keokuk on Monday, Centerville on Tuesday, and then Sigourney-Keota in this match by a combined score of 22-1.
“Definitely happy with the start,” Schau said. “But I think our guys know that we’ve got a long way to go.”
Schau saw a lot of positives in his team’s play after its opening week.
“I learned that our subs coming off the bench are some of the better ones we've had over the years,” Schau said. “We’re not dropping down with the ability we have on the field. We’re getting better at in-game adjustments. And I’ve learned that we still have a lot of heart on this team. We still work hard, and it shows when we play — there’s tons of energy. Even when they're tired, they find a little bit more to play. So there are some great things to have at the beginning of the year to build on.”
Sigourney-Keota (1-2) provided what Schau thought was the most difficult test of the week.

“They have some athletes,” Schau said. “They played us the best anybody's played us so far. They had athletes. Their positioning was good. We couldn't just railroad them. Their keeper was very athletic and eliminated a lot of our chances. So we had to come up with a scheme against that.
“We came up a little unlucky at times with some shots we should have made. We could have had a few more goals.”
Zach Estrada gave Central Lee a 1-0 lead 2 ½ minutes into the first half when he scored off a penalty kick. Mason Sanders’ goal with 31:28 remaining pushed the lead to 2-0.
Estrada’s goal with 27:37 left in the match put the Hawks up 3-0, then Jaedin Oglesby’s shot deflected off Sigourney-Keota goalkeeper Ty Goldman’s hands and into the net with 11:13 to play, providing the final margin.
Central Lee’s defense kept Sigourney-Keota from mounting much of an attack throughout the match. Goalkeeper Tristan Robins had his second shutout of the week, recording one save.
The Hawks get Fairfield next Tuesday before opening Southeast Iowa Super Conference play on Thursday at WACO.
“Fairfield is going to give us our major test coming in here,” Schau said. “They're a great team, a good team. They've played everybody really well so far. So we need to get some video on them. We beat them last year, but that doesn’t mean anything.”
