SIGOURNEY - The Central Lee boys' soccer team is off to its best start in more than 15 years, going 5-0 to start the season.
The Hawks ripped off three wins last week, including an emotional 9-2 win over Keokuk on Monday. That match resulted in four red cards for the Chiefs, which is the second time in three seasons the Chiefs have been barred from post-season following a review. That many red cards automatically prompts a review by the IHSAA. Head Coach Curt Dial received one of the red cards, as did three other captains on the team. A fourth captain received a yellow card, according to a Sports Illustrated report last week.
School officials at Keokuk then canceled the remainder of the season, citing poor representation of the district.
Ayden Kent and Colton Taft each had two goals in the win. Max Jones allowed the two goals in the keep but had five saves to help preserve the win. Peter Seyb and Mason Sanders also had two goals apiece. Brayden McCarty had the other goal. Taft had four shots on goal.
On Tuesday, the Hawks locked up their first SEI Super Conference win with a hard fought 3-2 win over WACO.
Seyb scored to get the Hawks on the board in the first half on an assist from McCarty at the 28:38 mark. WACO would respond with just :45 left in the half to tie things up at 1.
Seyb again would give the Hawks a brief lead just two minutes into the second half on an assist from Sanders to a 2-1 lead, but the Warriors would keep the pressure on with a goal at the 22-minute mark to again tie things up.
Sanders would then get the game-winner at 8:16 with a goal off a pass from Taft. Max Jones would lock down the net from there on out for the Hawks' win.
On Friday, the Hawks got their fifth win of the young season 6-1 over Sigourney. Micah Ashmore opened the scoring on a double assist from Sanders and Seyb. Jaedin Oglesby scored at 18:33 for a 2-0 lead. Sigourney would get on the board at 12:41 on a goal that got passed Jones, but then Sanders and Taft would each score for a 4-1 lead at the half.
Seyb and Zach Estrada each would score off assists to set the final at 6-1. Seyb, Kent, and Sanders all have five goals on the season. Sanders leads the team with 15 points, including five assists.
Jones had three saves in the win over Sigourney.
