FORT MADISON – Rodeo Park was packed again in Fort Madison, but for a running rodeo and not a livestock rodeo.
The Fort Madison boys and girls both captured titles at the Timm Lamb Invitational in Fort Madison Thursday night with Avery Rump and Riley Tripp both taking the top spot in the A division.
The Fort Madison girls won with just 27 points with Addison Rump taking a true 3rd and sneaking under 20 minutes in one of her best efforts of her career. Addison entered the state rankings this week, something that made her proud.
According to the Iowa Association of Track Coaches, Avery Rump is currently 13th in the state and Addison joined at 21st.
“I put in more work than I probably have in the past over the summer and I’m glad that’s showing,” Addison Rump said. “I didn’t even know I was in the rankings until my dad texted me. I usually don’t look and wait for Avery to tell me where she’s ranked. I’m so excited for her.”
Addison said the Rodeo trail was in better shape than she had thought considering the rain in the earlier part of the day.
“It was better than I thought it would be. I like running at home because I’m familiar with everything. I was worried about the conditions because of the rain, but it was quite beautiful the whole race. I really felt good. I was just out there running,” she said.
Avery Rump said she’s feeling much better this year after struggling a bit getting going last year and is proud of her strides as a senior.
“I’m just really excited to see what this year brings, especially for the team because I know they were disappointed last year,” she said.
The Hounds just missed making the state meet as a team at the district qualifier in Pella in 2024, but this year seems to be coming together nicely for both Rump girls and the Hounds in general.
“It’s my last time, so I might as well go out with a bang. I was really excited to run today and be around all the people in town that I know.”
Rump said her 18:55.8 may have been her personal best time ever on a 5K run and she’s hoping to build on that as the season goes.
Jordyn Marshall had a nice sixth with a 21:11, while Mara Smith’s 21:13.3 and Ellie Hellman’s 21:44.7 rounded out the scoring runners for the Lady Hounds.
For the boys', Tripp ran a 16:38.0 to take the overall Class A title. Hunter Wiegand also got under 17 minutes with a 16:58.7. Mason McLey and Nolan Guzman finished 7th and 8th at 17:07.6 and 17:21.6. Sophomore Jacob Walker edged into the scoring runners for Fort Madison with an 18:20.6.
Wiegand said he’s having one of the best years of his young career and credited the improvement to his sister Paeyton who dragged him around to her college workouts.
“Kudos to my sister. She decided to run another year at SCC and drug me along with her on workouts her coach gave her and that helped me out a lot. Miles went up, training went way up, and I started the season with 17:40 which is 40 seconds faster than my PR last year.”
He said he struggled a little in his first two years in high school, but decided this year he was gonna put his foot on the pedal.
He also credited Tripp for taking him out on workouts and pushing after his sister left for college.
