WASHINGTON – Fort Madison head boys' basketball coach Ryan Wilson became the winningest coach in history at FMHS when the Bloodhounds earned a 55-45 win over Washington on the road Friday night.
The Hounds win was Wilson’s 114th putting him past Mark Bigler, who coached at Fort Madison from 1989 to 1998.
The Bloodhounds led from the tip with the Demons fighting back to tie the score at 19 and 25. Fort Madison would always respond and got a season-high from junior Darius Foy with 19 points. Nolan Guzman led the Hounds with 21, 18 of those were in the second half as Washington adjusted their defense to collapse on Foy who had eight in the first quarter and 12 in the first half.
It’s the third win of the year for Fort Madison and brings them out of the cellar in the Southeast Conference with a 2-7 mark, a game in front of Fairfield (1-8). The Hounds are 3-15 overall and host Centerville Monday night before getting Keokuk at the Hound Dome on Friday for senior night.
Central Lee girls get win at Pekin
PACKWOOD – All 11 players got into the game Thursday night as the Lady Hawks knocked off Pekin in the 5th seed game of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference girls' Shoot-Out Thursday at Packwood.
Taylor Jones and Kenna Sandoval led the Lady Hawks with 16 points each. Nora Lampe had 15 on five 3-pointers, four in the first half. Rayleigh Burden had three points in the win.
The Lady Hawks are now 10-10 overall and 8-6 in conference play. They travel to Illini West Monday night to wrap the regular season. They open Class 2A Region 6 action Saturday with a trip to No. 9 Mediapolis. The Bulldogs own a couple lopsided wins over the Central Lee girls 62-29 back on Jan. 2, and 71-26 on Jan. 27.
Central Lee downs Pekin in Shoot-Out
DONNELLSON – The Central Lee Hawks got a balanced scoring attack in their 54-44 win over Pekin in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference boys' Shoot-Out Friday at Central Lee.
Kaden Swan led the way for the Hawks with 12 points, nine in the second half. Owen Swan had 10 in the win. Carson Morrison and Brett Cook each had eight points. Will Hayes had seven, all in the second half, and had eight rebounds. Owen Swan had eight assists.
The Hawks trailed by as much as five in the first half but rallied for a 12-4 run in the second quarter to get the momentum going.
The boys are 13-7 overall and 9-5 in SEISC South play. They travel to Davis County on Friday.
