Leona M. Torres, 82, of Keokuk, Iowa, passed away on October 7, 2026, at River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa.
Leona was born on October 14, 1943, in Washington state, the daughter of Lucille Jones Eshelman. Leona held several jobs throughout her working career, including the Residence Inn, Coalition Against Family Violence, and Walmart. She also tended bar throughout the area and was an instructor at Dayton’s Hair School in Keokuk.
Leona was an avid reader, with her book collection affectionately called a mini library by her family. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and sitting on the porch reminiscing about old times with her friends. As much as she loved her daily McDonalds Frozen Coke, she loved her family more. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. To Leona, family was more than blood relation. She extended her love to family and friends alike. She will always be remembered for her fighting spirit and loving personality.
Leona is survived by her son Mike (Amanda) Taylor of Burlington, Iowa; two daughters: Shawna Purdiman of Keokuk, Iowa, and Bobbi (James) Vawter of Lexington, Tennessee; two sisters: Wanda Eng and Marietti Daniels; her brother Danny Eshelman; nine grandchildren: Bryce, Jaion (Brittany), Tre, Mickey, Jacob, Shaquille, Hunter (Jacelynn), Devin and Corbin; thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Leona is preceded in death by her mother Lucille, her infant son Bryan, her sister Barbara and her granddaughter Cheyenne.
